WORKING TOGETHER FOR MORE NATIVE WOODS IN BIZKAIA
On Saturday 16th March, together with Gamiz-Fika Town-Hall and the Foundation Lurgaia, we organized a morning of planting native trees in Loba, Gamiz.
Around 60 volunteers turned out and we succeeded in planting up to 350 holly-oaks, buckthorn, strawberry trees, white-thorn, pedunculate oak-trees, field maples and various types of small bushes.
Native woods are one of the most valuable ecosystems in the world. Among the ecological benefits that they offer are those of ensuring a good fertile soil, helping the local water cycle, providing an excellent habitat for wildlife, reducing air pollution and providing food.etc. On the contrary, plantations of eucalyptuses and pine-trees only provide economic benefits to the few people who grow them.
If more town-halls could be convinced of the benefits of our native woods we could have a lot more of them in Bizkaia.
Thanks to everyone who participated. It was a great day out and one that we would all love to repeat!
