Waste management in Mungia

Waste management in Mungia

We know that a large amount of organic waste, plastic containers and glass is thrown into the general rubbish bin, so the first challenge of the Climate Emergency group has been to put a question mark on the Mungia Garbi (Mungia Clean) slogan. So we prepared the posters that we put on many of the bins to explain what percentage of waste is really recycled in Mungia.

In addition, we have adapted the motion on waste prepared by Ekologistak Martxan for Bilbao City Council to the situation in Mungia and have presented it in Mungia. We have added two points to the Bilbao motion: one to do with food waste; We urge the city council to take measures to prevent this waste, as there are alternatives such as the Solidarity Refrigerator. Secondly we have asked the council to manage locally the organic matter generated in Mungia by building a composting plant in the town.

At the moment only 1% is collected in the brown containers but we are sure that much more can be collected. As an experiment, in 3 bars for 5 days, and in 2 other bars for 2 days we collected almost 100 kilos of coffee waste which we then gave to a local farmer. Imagine how much organic matter  could be gathered if all the bars in Mungia took part!!! Our warmest thanks to Gurelur (cooperative), Goieta, Irudi, Amalur and Ibaiondo bars for participating in this pilot project.

As well as that we would also like to thank Izaga Vending for accepting to leave its coffee waste for local farmers. We are sure that many other bars and restaurants will be ready to take part in this initiative but as you know due to Covid-19 the government has decided to close them all. So in these difficult times we want to express our solidarity with them! We`re with you!!!
