PLANTING OF NATIVE TREES IN GAMIZ
It`s now been two years since we first got in contact with Gamiz-Fika Town-Hall to propose that some of the mountains that belong to the municipality be replanted with native trees, especially in view of the fact that the number of eucalyptus trees being planted in the village has seen an alarming increase, even near fertile land on the Butroi river bank!
Our reference being Lurgaia Foundation, an environmental group best-known for its work in recovering native woodlands, we proposed that the Town_Hall sign over land to Lurgaia as part of a land custody agreement where the land is re-planted with native trees and bushes. We plan to get people involved in planting these trees to recover the native wood which will improve biodiversity, soil quality, the aquatic system and other ecological services that native woods provide. The Town-Hall has agreed to our proposal and after a year agreed to sign an agreement whereby 2 pieces of land about 5 hectares in size in the townland of Lobas was ceded to Lurgaia to this end.
So Lurgaia, Gamiz-Fika Town-Hall and BBT have organized the first tree planting by and for the people on the 16th March. We will meet up in front of Gamiz church at 09:30 but it`s necessary to enroll before the 13th March at info@lurgaia.org and you should provide the names and ages of the participants, where you are coming from and if you have a space in your car and if let us know whether you mind sharing or not. You should also provide your phone number so that drivers and passengers can get in contact with each other. Lurgaia and BBT will provide the gloves and tools so you only need to bring something to eat and drink.
So come on, together we will take good care of Mother Earth!!!
