No small docks un Plentzia. SOS itsasadarra
On Sunday 17th November a large group of people gathered in the Astillero square in Plentzia to protest about the new mooring facility plans presented on 21st October by representatives of Plentzia Town-hall, the Euskadi Ports Association and the Basque Government. The plan is to increase the number of mooring berths quite considerably not just in the actual port but right along the river.
Participants were asked to sign a petition called for this project to be stopped as there has been no proper consultation process nor environmental assessment process carried out. There are also worries about the visual impact of these berths, the fact that they may alter the flow of the river, increase the possibility of floods and make navigating on the river more difficult. There is also a general feeling that the river is being privatized.
BBT signed the petition, gave a small financial contribution and will be ready to challenge this project which has no environmental impact assessment. Next Sunday there are plans for another protest in which people will be asked to hold hands and form a large chain on the banks of the river.
