Jata is one of the emblematic hills surrounding Mungia, but like most of the hills in the area it has been covered with quick-growing eucalyptus trees. In recent years, and in great part thanks to the work of groups like Kolore Guztietako Basoak and Lurgaia, there have been a number of initiatives aiming to stop this type of monoculture and calling for policies in favour of native trees. Now a group of concerned citizens in and around Mungia are calling on local municipal authorities to position themselves in favour of such policies and are calling on people to sign the following petition Jata Jagon (Take care of Jata) an get other people to sign it (Signature sheet):
Those of us who sign this petition are people from Mungialdea concerned about the serious deterioration of the mountains, forests and rivers of the region. The proliferation of eucalyptus monoculture has brought with it an impoverishment of the ecosystem, the landscape, the fauna and on the whole, of the natural environment. Jata, one of the most
emblematic of the area, is a clear example of this deterioration. That is why we ask the municipalities of Mungialdea to react to this situation by adopting, promoting or demanding measures and policies that enable the natural environment to be safeguarded and the native forest to be recovered. We request that you undertake the purchase of land for the reforestation of native species, or to stop planting eucalyptus trees on publicly owned land and replacing them with native species. Bakio and Gamiz-Fika have already embarked on this path and we encourage the rest of the town halls in the area to do the same starting with Jata-Tallu and to demand from the competent institutions a change towards a more sustainable forestry management.
