HAPPY NEW EKHI!
Iparralde (the three Basque provinces across the border) `s alternative money, the Eusko, is going from strength to strength. Indeed, some town-halls, including the biggest, Baiona, has started using the eusko to make payments. At the end of the day, local currencies are at the heart of a circular economy and if we don`t want an economy based on speculation then this is a valuable instrument.
In Bizkaia also we had our local money, the Ekhi, but around a year and a half ago it disappeared due to technical and legal problems. But the good news is that in 2019 it`s going to be on its way back thanks to Goiener and Ekhilur cooperative. But this time it will look very different as it will take the form of a bank card.
At the start it will only be used in a few places in an experimental way, and needless to say, BBT will be one of those places. However, the project can only see the light of day thanks to the efforts of unpaid volunteers. So, it has been asking people to become members of the Ekhilur cooperative for as little as 50 euros. Thanks to that small financial contribution the Ekhi will once again be a reality.
