FELLING OF HUNDRED-YEAR OLD OAK-TREES
It has become somewhat routine to see in recent months how one hundred-year old oak-trees have been cut down in the Uribe-Butroi area. The future urbanization of Larrabizker has meant that many trees have already been cut down and the felling of many more examples are threatened. But this doesn`t seem to matter to Mungia town-hall and it seems that little can be done but protest and watch on as this sad story unfolds.
On the road to Larrauri we have also seen this summer the savage felling of very old oaks, with the justification of extending or improving the road, though in this case it`s the responsibility of the Diputación. But no matter which authority is carrying this out, the result is always the same with roads, housing projects and other forms of infrastructure taking priority over the natural environment.
Technically there is a legal figure that protects and regulates the felling of oak trees, however, it`s very clear that in these cases no protection is offered. We could photograph a multitude of oak stumps that have been cut down in the area without permission. But whether it`s with permission or without legal permission the environmental aggressions in Bizkaia are unfortunately a daily thing.
BBT proposes the creation of an Instagram or Twitter account where we can upload the photos of the daily barbaric acts that occur in Bizkaia and affect the natural environment. Perhaps by bringing visibility to such uncomfortable realities more people will want to take care of our environment, and start prioritizing the environment over economic factors.
