Butterfly Oasis in Fruiz
It seems that Asociación Zerynthia`s idea of making a Butterfly Oasis has been taken up by various town-councils in our area and in the case of Fruiz we will be helping it to do so. In fact, Fruiz town-hall has decided to take part in the European Heritage Days. This year`s theme is A Living Countryside and it offers us the opportunity to show how we can look after the village in a sustainable way.
The first thing we have done is cut the grass to make pathways in a grassy area but where we will let the rest of the grass grow to help biodiversity and to form a sort of labyrinth for children to play in. We will later see how we can develop this area both for nature and as a place that the local people can enjoy.
The next thing we did was to make a huge oasis with the help of local people. It was a really nice activity and the children were particularly happy planting the flowers. Many people of different ages took part in the activity with the help of beautiful weather, although for a short while there was a thunderstorm. The only regret was that we hadn`t been able to do the activity in April rather than in July.
In September we will have an open meeting to explain to the villagers exactly what the European Heritage Days project is all about. On 7th October there will be a walk round Fruiz and we will take advantage of that walk to explain to the villagers what special things Fruiz`s countryside holds for nature. As well as that, it will afford us the opportunity to explain what villagers can do to help increase biodiversity in the village.
So we invite everyone to come to Fruiz on 7th October. It will be a lovely walk and an informative one as well. Come on and get involved! See you there!!!
