Butroi River Fish Will Continue To Die
Last June, several dead fish were found in the Butroi River. Due to the fact that it happened in the park it was seen by many people. Members of BBT wrote to the URA-water agency and we received the following response:
Thank you for contacting us.
Following the discovery of dead fish in Butroi river, an investigation was carried out and information was gathered; during contacts with the town-hall it became clear that it disputed the conclusions of our investigation. At the town-hall`s request we will also send the information to the Ertzaintza.
Traces of chlorine have been detected (close to the maximum limit established by the regulations) but the exact origin has yet to be determined.
However, it`s important to state that the Butroe Riverhas problems due to the very high levels of COD in the water.
To remedy that, the sludge waters from the municipalities of Arrieta or Errigoiti should be directed to the Mungia HUA, or else an autonomous solution should be provided to the sludge waters from these municipalities to ensure proper waste-water treatment.
It will also be necessary to connect the Mungia HUA to the discharges in this municipality, which is not currently connected to the sanitation network, especially those coming from the urbanization of Mount Berriaga.
This urbanization, despite having a discharge permit, does not properly treat its waste-water, as stated in the said permit, and it would be of extreme benefit to the river to channel its waste-water to the HUA in Mungia.
All of this would give the Butrón River greater resilience, by improving its ecological status.
Goodbye.
So if the surrounding towns do not take the measures indicated, and if Mungia Town Council does not reach an agreement with the Laukariz urbanization, sadly this will not be the last time we see dead fish in the Butroi river. We expect more from our authorities, and we would like to know when and how they are going to solve this problem. We have contacted all three municipalities referred to in the report and we wait to see what solution they will propose!
