A new oasis for butterflies in Gamiz

A new oasis for butterflies in Gamiz

Our friends and neighbors of the Bitartean Program of Emaus Social Foundation were encouraged to build an oasis of butterflies in their center in Gamiz, Fika.

Two months ago BBT and Emaus Gamiz started planning the oasis in the Errekalde farmhouse, together with the residents of the Bitartean Programme.

This is how we started: In the month of May we chose a place to build the oasis. It is worth noting that the area itself is a real oasis, thanks to the large number of wild flowers among the uncut grass where you can see butterflies, bees, flies and other insects. In June the residents and professionals got down to work,by beginning to turn the soil and make some craftwork to give to visitors. On July 4 our companion Belén gave a talk with the aim of motivating the participation of the residents; It consisted of an imaginary journey in which they learned about the relationship between man and nature, the environmental problem of the population decline of pollinators and the importance of doing something to find solutions, one of which being the oasis proposed by the butterfly association Zerynthia .

And finally the day arrived and on July 7 at 11 in the morning we all got together! The 17 residents and 5 professionals of Emaus, the family of the Bitartean Programme coordinator, Amaia and the group of BBT: Ana, David, Martín and Belén. We had a wonderful day and, with great enthusiasm, we planted the flowers as butterflies flew around us. We worked several hours until we finished planting the 36 plants… we did a great job, and well deserved the food and drink that was prepared for us.!

Thanks to all those who over these months were involved in this activity. There is now one more oasis in the Uribe-Butroi region. You can see here the oasis network that Zerynthia has registered.
