A new car-park for Arrieta?
In the last council meeting the Arrieta Town Council approved the construction of a car park that will be empty for most days of the year with EH Bildu voting against the proposal. BBT wonders if building a parking lot is suitable in this climate emergency. Like in Gaztelugatxe why are they making things easier to use the car? The priority today should be to reduce the use of private cars and strengthen other non-polluting modes of transport. Although the Basque Government has recognized the Climate Emergency, unlike the Coronavirus emergency, we do not see it implementing emergency measures to fight it. The Paris agreement calls for temperatures to be kept below 1.5 °C for 2030. But we are not on the right track and it is already 1.3 °C. Two years ago, the French environmental consultancy B-L Evolution was commissioned to write a report to show what France could do to meet the 1.5 °C goal. The report can be downloaded and read in French or English. You only have to read this report to realize how many profound changes we need to make if we really intend to slow down the rise in temperature in our way of life. The use of private cars must be radically reduced!!! Public, cheap electric taxis, car and bicycle rentals and pedestrian paths should be the priorities. We need to change our chip and our authorities need to show the way!!
