For the last number of years members and friends of BBT have been taking part in various of the surveys organized by the SEO to know the state of the bird population here. This week two members carried out the first of the two winter urban bird surveys, Sacin Urbano, in Mungia. The survey consists of an hour-long walk round the town noting down all the birds that can be seen or heard. There are normally not many surprises but there is always the pleasure of seeing winter visitors like the redwing, Turdus iliacus, or seeing birds like the dunnock, Prunella modularis, which come down from the surrounding hills in winter. One surprise was the sound of a brambling, Fringilla montifringilla, but unfortunately we didn`t manage to see it. But the greatest pleasure is enjoying a walk in good company and ending it by having a coffee or a drink. Sometimes the simple things in life are the best! In the spring version of the urban bird survey anyone who wants to know more about the local birds can join us on the walk. (Photos: Aitor Urrutia)
