The Basque Country is famous for its cooking talents. Anyone who comes from another country quickly learns that they don`t even know how to cut a potato the right way!!! Is there anywhere in the world that can boast as many Michelin star restaurants in such a small area? But above all what makes the Basque Country special is the large number of txokos or societies where people, mainly men, try to emulate the culinary delights of the many Basque celebrity chefs, their mothers!!! And it is in one of these txokos in Intxaurrondo, Donostia, that was born the idea of helping the many refugees that arrive in Greece by preparing food for them. This was back in 2012 and now every year volunteers from all over the Basque Country go to Lesbos to help prepare food in precarious circumstances for the increasing number of refugees that arrive there.
And it is these very volunteers that have signalled the need to send shoes. As you can imagine most of the refugees arriving from Africa have minimalist shoes to say the least and with winter approaching the sweltering heat of Lesbos changes for the cold of winter. So this week Zaporeak is asking people to bring shoes, good, comfortable, winter shoes of all sizes, to different collection points in the Basque Country. In Mungia the collection point is this Saturday in Matxin Plaza from 09:00 to 14:00. And naturally BBT is calling on its members and sympathizers to take part in this worthwhile initiative.
Note: Summer sandals need not apply!!!
