On Friday 24th September there will once again be an international student strike for the climate and once again BBT calls on its members to actively support this strike. In Bizkaia there are two mobilizations organized in Bilbo, one at 11:00 meeting up at the Arriaga Square and another at 18:30 in Moyua Square. This year`s strike comes at a time when Covid restrictions are being gradually lifted and we return to pre-Covid normality. Governments are keen to say that jobs are being created and the economy is starting to recover but very few politicians are ready to say that pre-Covid normality is impossible if we are serious about a carbon-free future. Despite the talk of new green solutions that will enable us to continue our consumer-dependent lifestyle the reality is that we are not reducing our CO2 emissions and in fact according to the latest reports by the United Nations by 2030 our carbon emissions will continue to rise by 16% when we should be reducing them by 45% to avoid the worst effects of hotter conditions. This means that there could be a temperature increase of 2.7%, far above the limits set by the international community. When will our authorities wake up to the reality that time is running out and that we must treat climate change as the greatest emergency we have ever known and start acting consequently.
