September 12, 2019
On September 27, the World Climate Strike will be celebrated with a global reach and which, in the case of Spain, has the support of more than 300 organizations who have signed up to the manifesto published last July in defense of the future, of a living planet and a fair world. The strike aims to demand that governments take effective measures in the face of the climate emergency. This climate crisis is the greatest challenge facing humanity and, for this reason and in order to respond to the magnitude of the problem, society is coordinating actions on a worldwide basis. During the week of September 20-27, numerous actions will take place in numerous cities culminating in mass mobilizations worldwide on September 27.
In recent weeks, numerous gestures of support for the Global Climate Strike have been shown by different social activist groups as well as the scientific and artistic community, which reflect the need to address an urgent and just ecological transition. It is expected that these gestures of support will be repeated in the coming weeks and will serve as an incentive to call on the whole society to participate in the actions called. Actions in the form of demonstrations, student and consumer strikes, work-place closures, mobilizations and rallies in the workplace and on the streets … a great, common and unitary cry in the climate struggle.
The climate crisis is a direct consequence of the extractivist production model, based mainly on the use of fossil fuels and current globalized consumption, that puts human survival and that of a large number of other species and ecosystems at risk, and in particular affects the most impoverished and vulnerable people.
For decades, the scientific community has warned of the deterioration of a large number of ecosystems, both terrestrial and marine, as well as the point of no return in climate change. Recent reports on the state of biodiversity of the IPBES (Intergovernmental Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services) indicate that about one million species of animals and plants are on the verge of extinction as a result of human activities. Likewise, the latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), published last August, points out that reducing greenhouse gas emissions in all sectors is the only way to keep global warming below 1.5 ° C.
Failure to respond quickly and forcefully to the climatic, ecological and civilization emergency will mean the death and the increase in extreme poverty for millions of people, in addition to the extinction of many species and even of complete ecosystems.
Because of all this, and in defence of the present and the future, of a living planet and of a just world, the people and groups which have signed up to the manifesto make an appeal to the whole of society (citizens and different social, environmental, cooperation, trade unions, social activists , etc.) on September 27 to join the various planned mobilizations: student strikes, consumer strikes to build alternative consumer strategies that respect the rights, life and biophysical limits of the planet, and a strike in the Andalusian education sector called by by CGT. Likewise, trade union organizations will convene assemblies in the workplace to request ecological and fair transition measures in the companies; while some environmental and social organizations will make a 24-hour closure of their offices and urge other activists to a total or partial closure in the course of the demonstration.
The convening organizations and platforms also call on the entire population sto take part in symbolic concentrations of four minutes and 15 seconds in offices, schools, town halls and other workplaces, between 11 and 12 o’clock in the morning. This act will serve as a reflection on the great alarm signal that supposed reaching a concentration of carbon dioxide particles in the atmosphere of 415 ppm (parts per million) last April, a level that had not been recorded for three million years,
This manifesto, which already has the support of more than 300 organizations, is only the beginning. In the coming weeks, we will ask for the support of individuals people who want to take the necessary measures to face the current ecological and social crisis.
Below is a list of the mobilizations confirmed for September 27. This will be updated in the coming days through the websites of the summoning platforms Youth for Climate, 2020 Rebellion for Climate and the the Alliance for Climate.
